IAS Syllabus 2020: The UPSC Civil Services examination is believed to be one of the toughest examinations in India. If a candidate is focused enough and works hard with the right strategies, guidance, and study material then he/she can easily get through the exam. The UPSC IAS Syllabus has been released by the board. Civil services examination has 3 phases and only those who clear all 3 can come out victorious. First is the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type), second is the Civil Services (Mains) Examination (Descriptive Type) and third is the Personal Interview (Personality Test)

In the UPSC Prelims exam, there are 2 compulsory papers namely the:-
General Ability Test (GAT) and
Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) to test the analytical skills
Each paper is of 200 marks and carries a total of 400 marks. The papers are objective in nature with multiple-choice questions.
One-third of the marks is deducted for every wrong answer and the duration of each paper is 2 hours. Blind candidates are allowed an extra time of 20 minutes for each paper.

UPSC Prelims Syllabus
Syllabus for General Studies Paper
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change
- General Science
Syllabus for CSAT Paper
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)

UPSC Mains Exam
The Civil Services Main Examination pattern has been revised by the UPSC since 2015. Now, the mains examination has 9 papers (7+2) and the two qualifying papers are:-
- Any modern Indian language
- English language

The standard of the General Studies subjects is of a graduate degree level.
General Studies Papers:

Language papers:
Here is the structure of the language paper.
- Essay – 100 marks
- Reading comprehension – 60 marks
- Precis Writing – 60 marks
- Translation:
- English to compulsory language (e.g. Hindi) – 20 marks
- Compulsory language to English – 20 marks
- Grammar and basic language usage – 40 marks
The rest of the seven papers can be written in any of the languages mentioned under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India or in English.
Optional Subjects
The UPSC Mains syllabus gives a list of 48 Optional Subjects and candidates need to choose any one of them.
IAS Interview/UPSC Personality Test
Candidates who clear the UPSC Mains Exam will be called for the 'Personality Test/Interview'. These candidates will be interviewed by a special Board appointed by the UPSC. The objective is to assess whether the candidate has all the qualities and their suitability for a career in the civil services of the country. The interviewers want to explore the mental qualities and analytical abilities of the candidate.
Hence, clearing all the phases of the UPSC exam is very difficult but those who have the determination to work hard, can easily crack this and achieve their goal.
